Winter Destinations near Austin

Within city limits, Austin is blessed with a galore of activities, events, and fun this winter. Its location within Central Texas means that much of the state is accessible within a reasonable trip by car or truck. Such is the beauty of its location that beautiful locations are easily within reach. Guadalupe River State Park rests on 1,938 beautiful acres on a four-mile stretch of the Guadalupe River. Many regard it as a perfect place to camp. Pitch your tent at one of the campsites near the water or scope out a secluded spot for ultimate tranquility. Three campsites are available to offer the ideal gathering spot for friends and family. Just a short drive from Austin (and San Antonio, too), guests may find it hard to soak up all the natural beauty in just one visit. On the river, you can fish and canoe (only the heartiest of souls would swim at this time of year), while 13 miles of hiking and biking trails are made just right for those who prefer to explore on foot.

Located just outside of Llano in central Texas, Enchanted Rock State Natural Area is best known for its famous and enormous piece of pink granite rock, one of the largest natural rock formations in America. Walk-in campsites with tent pads are available in addition to more rustic hike-in campsites, where ample shade and amazing Hill Country vistas lend a fantastic location for a picnic and a snooze after a day of adventure. Stargazers will be delighted to tilt their necks skyward after creating memories with family and friends climbing rocks or meandering through 11 miles of hiking trails.

One of the biggest outdoor attractions in Texas, Colorado Bend State Park boasts a terrific combination of scenic vistas and outdoor activities. Located a short drive from Austin, it is a top-flight destination for state campers, where barebones campsites, backpack camping sites, and drive-up sites are available. The park’s highlight is Gorman Falls, a 65-foot cascading waterfall that tumbles into a lush fern-coated grotto. Visitors will also find plenty of opportunities for fishing, paddling, caving, and birding.
