About Bastrop

The first settlers arrived in the area that would become the town of Bastrop in the early 1800s. Named after Felipe Enrique Neri, Baron de Bastrop, who worked with Stephen F. Austin to move families there, the town grew steadily. A fire in 1862 destroyed much of its commercial center, and the National Register of Historic Places added 131 surviving buildings. This earned the town the moniker "Most Historic Small Town in Texas".

Today, Bastrop is a busy community and a big destination for history, and film buffs. The “Most Historic Small Town in Texas” is filled with attractions, chief among them the “Old Iron Bridge” over the Colorado River, the Bastrop Opera House, and the Kerr Community Center. Bastrop served as a filming location for a number of famous films, such as the original Texas Chain Saw Massacre. You can still visit many locations from the famous film.
